The Ins and Outs of Amending the Wyoming Constitution

Wyoming State Capitol Wyoming State Capitol

The constitutional amendment is brought before the house and the senate. It requires a two-thirds majority in both chambers. This would require 40 votes in the house and 20 votes in the senate. Presently there are 41 republicans in the house and 23 republicans in the senate.

If the amendment is passed with the necessary two-thirds majority - it is then brought before the citizens of Wyoming for a vote. The amendment is placed on the ballot.  The amendment requires in excess of fifty percent of the cast votes to pass .According to Wyoming statutes constitutional amendments can only be put on the ballot during general elections. General elections are held every two years on the first Tuesday of November.  If the amendment is not passed by the senate and the house this summer and put on the ballot this November (2010) Wyoming citizens will have to wait until 2012.

This is one of the reasons the special session must be held this summer!
